Stud Poker is variety of Poker, an off-shoot card game that has found a number of takers the world over. The game involves players receiving combinations of cards, some turned upwards while others are laid face-down on the table. The cards are to be played with during
a progression of many rounds of betting. Unlike a number of other variants of poker, in Stud Poker, the player who begins the round with the first bet does not have to be the same person throughout the course of the entire game. In other words, the person laying the initial bet can be different in each round, depending upon who it is that has the most optimal combination of playing cards.
The use of 5 cards per round of game became all the rage during the American Civil War. The game is one of the most well like versions of Stud Poker, the other involving the use of seven cards. Now a days, most professional casino parlors as well as informal games involve playing with seven cards.
Naming the betting round often depends upon how many cards are possessed by each player at the start of the round. If the players possess five cards each the round is deemed to be the “fifth round” or the “fifth street”. However, this naming convention is ordinarily disposed of in the final round which is generally known as the “end round” or the “river”.
Stud Poker in itself has a number of variations as well. Some of these are Australian Stud, Crocodile Stud and Buffalo Stud to name a few. Crocodile Stud is played as a variation of the conventional five card stud. Each one of the players is handed an extra card which acts as a downcard. This is done at the beginning of the game round. The rule defining Crocodile Stud is that in the concluding set of the game each player can employ the use of only one of the two downcards that have been dealt to him. Buffalo Stud involves changing some of the rules of the conventional seven card stud set. In the usual game, each player is dealt two downcards in the initial round. In Buffalo Stud however the players each receive three cards that serve as downcards. The rule is that even though the players possess three downcards, no more than two of these can be used during the closing hand of the game. Australian Stud is played much in the same way as Buffalo Stud, the difference lying in the rule that the players must remove their additional card that serves as the hole card once the initial betting round is over.
